Today’s claims that young Australians are averse to working early mornings, or are averse to hard work at all, is completely out of touch.

The reality is that everyday, millions of young Australians join their older colleagues in rising early to open our supermarkets and prepare our stores in every town and city across this country.

They work hard all day, and often very late into the night, restocking selves and preparing for the next day’s service.

In the face of enormous challenges, such as cuts to TAFE funding and increasing university costs, and the rise of insecure work they manage to balance work and study in a rapidly changing world of work.

It is deeply disappointing that instead of respecting their vital contribution, some in the business community have chosen to deny them decent pay increases, cut their weekend penalty rates and to publicly demonise their efforts.

As a nation, we owe our young Australians far better treatment than that.
